The Pine River-Backus Tigers baseball team has some "big shoes to fill" this spring following the graduation of six talented seniors. But the good news is head coach Michael Dinnel's squad does have 10 letterwinners to build around after finishing 13-8 last season.
"Some players will be playing different positions, and be asked to step into leadership roles," said Dinnel, who has compiled a 24-16 record as the Tigers' coach the past two seasons. "It will be exciting to see how our players will respond to these challenges."
Letter-winners include: seniors Torry Hirschey, Logan Gordon, Steven Gardner and Austin Phillipson; juniors Trevor Birr, George Davidson and Hunter Triplett; and sophomores Dalton Middendorf, Trevor Redding and Nolan Olivier.
Hirschey, Davidson and Redding all pitched for PR-B last season.
Others who could contribute are junior Logan Tandenski, and sophomores Wyatt Semmler and Owen Carlson.
Ben Kinser and Terry Brink are assistant coaches for the Tigers, who finished 9-4 in Northland Conference action last spring. PR-B's 2018 season ended with a 9-3 loss to Hinckley-Finlayson in the Section 5A championship game. Dinnel believes that was the first time the Tigers had ever reached the section title game. The Tigers advanced by topping Hill City/Northland 5-3 in the West Subsection championship game.
