Jake Poehler, Owen Carlson, Josh Pettit, Evan Koering and Myca Reynolds each won two matches as the Pequot Lakes/Pine River-Backus Road Crew wrestling team lost to Deer River 43-33 and defeated Walker-Hackensack-Akeley 65-9 at the Deer River triangular on Thursday, Dec. 6, at Deer River.

"We have seen some good competition in the first two weeks and that will continue," said Road Crew coach Travis Hoffarth. "Overall, I think we have battled to the best of our abilities. We have had a few early season injuries, so a few of our guys taking the mat are young. The kids that are filling in are getting valuable varsity experience. We still have a long way to go because we don't have any state entrants from previous seasons on the team. So we're counting on our most experienced kids in the room to set the tone for a tough practice atmosphere."

The Road Crew, 2-3 in dual meets, was scheduled to face the Mille Lacs Raiders in Onamia on Tuesday, Dec 11, before competing at 17th annual Big Bear tournament in Cass Lake on Friday, Dec. 14, and Saturday, Dec. 15.

"The Big Bear tournament will be tough again this season with 39 teams and a lot of talented individuals," Hoffarth said. "Our goals will be different from wrestler to wrestler. Some are looking to place in the top eight, others are looking to make it to day two, and others are trying to win a match in the tournament. Seeing good competition is the best way to improve."

"Connor is off to a nice start this season," Hoffarth said of the junior. "He gets after it as soon as the whistle blows. We are trying to get all of our wrestlers to be more aggressive, and to set a tone for their matches, Connor has bought into that approach."
