Pequot Lakes graduate Vanessa Lane of South Dakota State University won the heptathlon at the Summit League Outdoor Championships May 10-12, in Tulsa, Okla.
Lane, a senior, brought home her first outdoor heptathlon championship with two event wins, two personal-best marks, and two season-best marks. On the last day of the competition, she added a win in the 800 meters and finished third in the javelin throw.
Lane ended the first day in the heptathlon lead by 117 points. She added personal-best marks in the 100 hurdles and 200 meters, winning the 200. She beat her previous-best time in the 100 hurdles by 0.25 seconds and beat her best in the 200 by 0.29 seconds, which was good enough to break into the school's top 10 at 10th all-time.
Lane also added a season-best mark in the high jump, improving by 0.5 inches and just missed tying her PR of 5-3. She did tie her best place-finish in the high jump at the championships. Her throw in the shot put was her second-best distance and second-best place finish at the outdoor championships.
Lane finishes her career with the school record in the heptathlon, second all-time in the pentathlon, tied for ninth all-time in the 60 meters, and 10th all-time in the outdoor 200. She also has a school record in the 4x200m relay as well as being on the school's second-fastest 4x100m relay and outdoor 4x400m relay, third-fastest sprint medley, and fifth-fastest indoor 4x400m relay.
On Friday, May 4, Lane competed in three individual events and one relay, winning one and recording two personal bests, at the Howard Wood Dakota Relays Friday, May 11.
In her last event, Lane won her second career javelin throw competition with the school's eighth-best mark all-time. She improved her best by two inches and won the event by 2 feet, 1 inch.
In her first individual event, Lane posted a personal-best mark in the 400 meters with a second-place finish, beating her previous-best by 1.62 seconds. She just missed the school's top 10 by 0.13 seconds.
Lane added another top-three finish in the 200 meters and posted her third career top-three finish in the event.
Lastly, Lane helped add the Jackrabbits' best time in the 4x100 relay as the second leg of the third-place team.
