Letter to the Editor: Ukraine's gun control
A free government must recognize the unquestionable right to self-defense and trust its people with the private possession of firearms.
This should be an eye-opener for Americans.
Our government and news media never mention, even before Russia's invasion of Ukraine, that Ukrainians were prohibited from owning handguns, long arms only on a "may issue" basis, strictly licensed by its government firearms national registry.
So 640,615 Ukrainians of 51 million were licensed, just 1%. Even at the 11th hour President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said its home guard should consist mostly of professionals, not everyday citizens. Bad decision - this hangs over his head.
Why would a free nation fear its own people? A free government must recognize the unquestionable right to self-defense and trust its people with the private possession of firearms.
Uncertainty - we had that with Obama with his gun control threat when NRA membership went from 1.5 million to 5 million. For you liberals who are always pushing gun control for America - we have 81.5 million households with firearms.
So there's little doubt that if the 51 million Ukrainian citizens would have had the right to firearms (with their type of resistance), I don't think Russia would have attacked in the first place.
Years earlier, a then-Sen. Barack Obama traveled to Ukraine and offered a ton of U.S. dollars if its political leaders agreed to destroy their large stores of military small arms. Those guns could have been sold outright to the citizens of the country, but arming private citizens was unthinkable to the Ukrainian regime.
It's once more a tragic example of what can happen to people disarmed by their own government. If you think it can't happen here, think again. Chicago/Democratic controlled. Strict gun laws. (2021) 797 murders, 684 Blacks on Blacks. National city leaders do nothing - still the Democrats administration comes after the law abiding year after year. It shows their true colors.
