Letter to the Editor: Systemic racism revisited

My hope is that those who claim that systemic racism does not exist in America will do some reading on the subject and recognize that “we” (white Americans, collectively) control laws, policies and customs that have disadvantaged persons of color.

Based on the strong objection to my claim that “systemic racism” does exist (Echo 10/13/21), I offer here supporting statements from the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (together with the Episcopal Church in America, the Anglican Church of Canada and the ELCA of Canada) along with the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops (who agree with me).

“This Advent, we feel called to name the truth that the sin of racism and white supremacy is ongoing. People continue to be subjected to and oppressed by these systemic evils, even within our own churches and the ecumenical movement.” (The ELCA and ecumenical partners - https://www.elca.org/News-and-Events/8084?_ga=2.47465127.1860183154.1634238063-109498335.1633800175 )

“Today's continuing inequalities in education, housing, employment, wealth and representation in leadership positions are rooted in our country's shameful history of slavery and systemic racism.” (The U. S. Conference of Catholic Bishops - Andrew Koppelman, USA Today opinion contributor.)

My hope is that Echo Journal columnist Peter Abler and the letter to the editor reader and writer who claim that systemic racism does not exist in America will do some reading on the subject and recognize that “we” (white Americans, collectively) control laws, policies and customs that have disadvantaged persons of color.

We call that systemic racism. We cannot allow it to continue whether the change comes from the top down or the bottom up.
