Breakfast with Santa, Christmas for Kids, Halloween for kids, Easter egg hunt for kids. Food shelves, Ronald McDonald House, St. Cloud and Minneapolis veterans home. Food basket, Boys State, Girls State, quilts for St. Cloud veterans. Fisher House, Cub Scouts, swim program, shut-in meals.

School library books, Legionville, Pequot Lakes Chamber, Pequot Lakes police, Pequot Lakes FIre Department, Northern Crow Wing First Responders, Forgotten Children’s Fund. Minnesota home schools, Legion baseball, Children’s Miracle Network, national child welfare program, senior nutrition program, free rental of the Legion back hall to members.

And there are a few more.

These are programs American Legion Post #49 has sponsored for our community through the years. With all volunteer help, these donations hit between $80,000-$90,000 a year, and we’re proud to do so.

With that in mind, the Fourth of July parade committee made the decision to eliminate Post #49 from the parade route this year. It came to the post’s attention June 20, 12 days before this Fourth of July. A request was made to include the post. It was denied.

You have to wonder what’s really happened to common sense. It’s like it doesn’t exist any more. The same goes for communications.

With common sense, you would have thought the parade committee three or four months ago would have come to the post and talked - communicated - with our post commander and the “E” board of its intentions for the parade. It’s our “big” day at the 49.

This is a slap in the face to the post and its membership after its past and present loyalty to the community. Completely inexcusable.
