Wow! Thiede should know better!

I give a very measured statement about a chamber event, read so that clarity was insured. The reporter asks a sidebar question, and you run a story. Now you think you can accuse me of going public with secondhand information and it is bad form? Since when have you empowered me to choose stories you wish to run in your paper?

"The chamber, of which the Dispatch is a member ..." No, you are on the chamber board of directors. My entire point was not to identify anyone in my tirade; it was to point out that this tactic has been employed by the chamber for 37 years and I don't like it any more now than I did as a freshman legislator.

As a former newspaperman myself I know how difficult it is to fight bias in any form. That's why I would have preferred a televised board meeting to make my points. Your usual filters would not have been in place and the public could have watched the entire statement and made their own decisions.

I didn't make my statement to help you sell newspapers. I made it to make sure this chamber executive learns early in his career that not all politicians will sit quietly by when they smell inconsistent treatment.

No matter how much after-the-fact twisting is done, the event was billed as a "chamber event," and I "heard" not all were treated equally.

Guilty! I should have known the Dispatch would be on the defensive to protect the status quo.

Paul Thiede,

Pequot Lakes

Crow Wing County commissioner
