I would like to thank the citizens of Pequot Lakes and the surrounding communities for donating the gift of life at the Red Cross Blood Drive at the Pequot Lakes American Legion August 5 & 6. On August 5th we collected 73 units of blood and that met the goal the Red Cross had set. On August 6th we collected 41 units which was one over goal. That is a total of 114 units.

We had 13 donors giving double red cells. Double red cells are taken only from donors having type O+, O-, A-, and B- blood. In addition, the eligibility requirements are a little higher: the hemoglobin must be a little higher and the height and weight requirements also increase. The Red Cross does not collect double reds at all donation sites and we are very fortunate that we always collect them at our Post.

Although we exceeded our goal, the numbers were down somewhat. There were a number of our usual donors that are working very long hours cleaning up after the severe wind storm and just couldn't take time off to donate or felt they needed all the extra energy they may have lost following a donation.

The next blood drive at The American Legion is scheduled for February 17, 2016. Donors should plan for their next appointment by drinking plenty of fluids at least the day before and the day of the drive. In addition, eating some iron rich foods or taking vitamins with iron a few days before donating would be a big help. Please, don't skip your meal or liquids before donating. I will be making calls again in February. Thank You again for sharing the gift of life!
