In his latest opinion column (June 1, 2017), Pete Abler is once again blaming the ills of the society on nameless, faceless liberals and progressives. This time he posits that pornography, which progressives have failed to suppress, is one of the causes for divorce.

I think alcoholism is a much more prevalent cause for divorce than pornography. Yet, the Minnesota House and Senate, which are controlled by conservatives, passed a law permitting the sale of this addictive drug on the sabbath. I find it very difficult to see how this law is pro-family.

Since Mr. Abler seems to dislike progressive ideas so much, I thought it might be fun to have a friendly, little contest. I will label myself a Republican progressive, an anathema today, as one of my favorite progressive politicians is enshrined on Mount Rushmore.

Over the weeks, each of us will present one idea from their side that has benefitted the people and that the other side has adopted. Alas, I expect that Mr. Abler will not participate. Why should he?

I will continue, however, because I think more progressive ideas have benefited society than conservative ones. Besides, I believe the readership should be reminded how much America has benefited from progressive ideas. I was going to limit ideas from the last hundred years; but alas, I cannot.

My first nomination is the progressive idea behind national parks. Land should be set aside for the enjoyment of the common person. Yellowstone was established in 1872; the National Park Service was created in 1916.

This progressive idea has spread around the world. Even the conservative voter has embraced the idea; they visit national parks by the thousands. I think this is the most unique progressive idea that America has given the world.
