Vogt's Notes: Know of a great Pequot Lakes area business? Nominate it now

Who will be the first Business of the Year in the greater Pequot Lakes area?

It could be your business, if it meets a couple of simple criteria: Your business must be a Pequot Lakes Chamber member, and it must be in the Pequot Lakes, Breezy Point or Jenkins area.

If your business is eligible, or if you know an outstanding business that meets the criteria, what are you waiting for? Who doesn't want to be singled out and recognized for industry and community leadership?

The Pequot Lakes Chamber of Commerce will recognize the winning business in an informal, laid-back setting Tuesday, July 10, in Trailside Park as part of Bean Hole Days. It's a win-win evening event that will honor community leaders and celebrate the city's longtime, quirky tradition of lowering giant cast iron kettles of beans to be baked overnight underground.

Of course, hordes of residents and tourists alike will flock to Trailside Park at noon the next day, July 11, to devour those piping hot baked beans free of charge after the kettles are raised.

In addition to the yet-to-be-chosen Business of the Year, Citizen of the Year Renee Anderson (chosen by the Echo Journal) and community volunteers (chosen by Community Action of Pequot Lakes) will be honored Tuesday evening, July 10.

The chamber could use a few more business nominations. Businesses can nominate themselves; or businesses, organizations and individuals can nominate businesses for the award.

"There are so many businesses in our area doing amazing things," said Chris Monroe, Pequot Lakes Chamber director. "It seems natural that the chamber recognize the many contributions businesses are making to their industries and to our community."

Download an application from the chamber website at or pick up one or more at the chamber office. Email completed applications to Monroe at, or drop the application at the chamber office.

The Business of the Year Award will shine the spotlight on a Pequot Lakes Chamber member who displays excellence in leadership in the marketplace and in the community. Individual leaders or employees; charities and community organizations; schools; government units or agencies; religious organizations and associations are not eligible.

The Pequot Lakes Chamber Advisory Board will review applicants and determine the winner. If an advisory board member's business is nominated, that board member will not participate in the selection process. The award recipient will be notified in mid-June.

What are you waiting for? Nominate yourself or another business now! The deadline to submit applications is June 1.
