Dr. Joe Hogan
Joe Hogan, age 99, of North Mankato, passed away on Saturday, August 7, 2021 at Birchwood Cottages in North Mankato.
Visitation will be from 4-7pm, Wednesday, August 11, 2021 at Northview ~ North Mankato Mortuary (2060 Commerce Drive, North Mankato, MN 56003). Funeral service will be held at 10am, Thursday, August 12, 2021 at Northview with visitation one hour prior. Burial with full military honors will follow at Minneopa Cemetery. Joe was born August 3, 1922 in Minneapolis to Joseph and Zoe (Sargent) Hogan. He lived in Minneapolis until moving to Mankato in August 1964. He served in the U.S. Army Air Forces for three years during World War II. Following his service, Joe earned his B.A. and B.S. from the University of Minnesota (U of M), taught public school, then returned to the U of M, completing his M.A. and PhD in Educational Psychology with specialties in Counseling and School Psychology. He was a Licensed Psychologist for over 30 years, serving in private practice and consulting with school districts in Minnesota.
He was an instructor at the U of M for three years, then transferred to Mankato State College in 1964 as a professor in Educational Psychology. He was chair of the Counseling and Student Personnel Department, retiring in 1993. During his time at Mankato State College/University, he served as president of the Minnesota Association of Counseling and Development, Minnesota Association of Counselor Education and Supervision, Mankato State University Faculty Association, and served on the Interfaculty Organization Board of Directors.
In addition, he was selected as Counselor Educator of the Year in 1992 by the Southwest Minnesota Counselors Association and the Minnesota School Counselors Association. He received the Distinguished Service Award from the Minnesota Association of Counseling and Development in 1989 and was selected as a Connector to Success from the Minnesota School Counselors Association in 1993.
On November 25, 1960, he married Barbara Moline in Minneapolis. Joe and Barbara enjoyed traveling both overseas and domestically. They traveled abroad with St. Olaf University tours and also to Sweden to renew relations with relatives of Barbara’s grandmother, who immigrated to the United States in the 1880s. In 1967, Joe and Barbara purchased the cabin in Nisswa and enjoyed spending time with their children, grandchildren, and many other friends and relatives over the years. He served on the board of Cullen Lakes Association and loved upgrading their cabin over the last 50 years.
One of Joe’s passions was being on the council for the Mankato Area Lifelong Learners. He enjoyed talking to others about his trips to the Mankato Free Press to give the updates for upcoming events.
After the passing of Barbara in 2018, Joe filled his days spending time with his beloved rescue dog, Gus. Even on the coldest of days and nights, he would take Gus for “short” walks, stopping and visiting with anyone along their way. He lived independently at home until April of 2021.
Joe is survived by his son, Joe Hogan (partner Theresa) of North Mankato; grandchildren, Laura (Josh) McNamara and Christopher Hogan; and great-grandchildren, Connor and Kaylin McNamara.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Barbara on September 13, 2018; sons, Larry Hogan on December 2, 2015 and Bill Hogan on July 28, 2015.
Joe’s family wishes to extend their deepest gratitude for the compassionate care he received from all the staff at Birchwood Cottages in North Mankato. They would also like to thank his neighbors on Parkside for their friendship over the years.
