Lewis T. Gasink

Lewis Townsend Gasink passed away in Virginia at the age of 99, on Feb 21, 2019. His memorial service will be held at Star Lake Camp in Pequot Lakes, MN at 9 a.m. on June 29, one day before his 100th birthday. He was born in North Minneapolis to Edward James Gasink and Lulu Townsend Gasink, and had two older siblings, Ruth Gasink Boyer and John Winslow Gasink. Lewis graduated from North High School in Minneapolis and received a mechanical engineering degree from the University of Minnesota in 1942. He served in the Army Air Corps as an engineer in several different bomber programs from 1941 to 1946, leaving the service at the age of 26 at the rank of Major. His WWII service included field assignments in Australia, New Guinea, Polynesia, Great Britain and Germany. After leaving the military, he began a 35 year career in engineering and management with companies in Minnesota and Illinois. His 37 year retirement was filled with family, wonderful friends, lakeside adventures and legendary engineering projects. He was preceded in death by his wife, Carolyn, son James, brother, sister, and parents. He is survived by three children, David (Maureen), Robert (Joanne) and Susan (Brooks Bateman), 6 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, 7 nieces and nephews, 17 great nieces and nephews. He was an active member of Grace United Methodist Church in Pequot Lakes for 37 years, a Master Mason for 74 years, a naturalist, Scout leader, first responder, story teller, inventor and Star Lake Camp Grandfather. He generously shared his extensive knowledge and love for life with everyone he encountered, especially children. Lewis will be memorialized at Star Lake Camp on June 29th, 2019 at 9 a.m. and subsequently interred at the Mora Cemetery next to his wife and son.
