Harry Richard Hammerstad

Harry R. Hammerstad, age 75, resident of Pillager, passed away on Thursday, January 19, 2017 at his home. Harry was born on November 19, 1941 in Minneapolis to Harry W. and Yvonne (Carpentier) Hammerstad.

Harry is survived by his wife Barbara (Johnson) Hammerstad; son, Richard (Deb) Hammerstad, Milaca; daughter, Sharon Turner (Doug), Zimmerman, MN, grandsons, Derek and Thomas; daughter, Tina (Scott) Ebertowski, grandsons, Nate and Tracy, great grandson, Alexander Scott; son, Bronson Hammerstad, Litchfield, MN, grandchildren, Brandon, Nicolas, Austin and Tori; daughter, Tara Hammerstad, Buffalo, MN, grandchildren, Breiha, Jacob and Graci; step children, Stacy (Troy) Haigh, Somerset, WI, granddaughter, Stevie; stepson, Steve (Leah) Ondris, Pillager, MN; siblings, Judith Ann (Hammerstad) Bandel, Brainerd, Nancy Gale (Hammerstad) DeWitt, Clarendon, CA, Lonnie Jean (Hammerstad) Jacobson, Brainerd, MN.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Harry and Yvonne Hammerstad; his uncle William Osborne Hammerstad; two aunts, Mable and Evelyn.

Harry loved racing his car at North Central Speedway for many years during the 70's and 80's and he was very good at it!!! He was well known for his #71 purple car. Harry worked for North Star Plating (now LKQ) for 25 years in Brainerd, he was given an opportunity to manage several exchanges in North Carolina, doing so for ten years. He then retired to Balsam Lake, WI for ten years, coming home to Brainerd in 2015. He worked on cars and ATV's and also enjoyed restoring cars and trucks in his spare time and has done some wonderful work. His other favorite gift to all who knew him was that he was a fabulous cook, he loved grilling that steak at midnight, if he ran out of steak, you would be served White Castles!

Services will be held 6:00 p.m. on Thursday, February 2, 2017 at Nelson-Doran Funeral Home in Brainerd with Pastor Steve Benson officiating. Visitation will begin the hour prior to services.
