Donald F. (Pete) Peterson

Donald F. Peterson was born December 29, 1926 in Bruce Township, Todd County to Albert and Manda (Peterson) Peterson. He grew up on the family farm and attended country school to 8th grade and Swanville High School until 11th grade. He enlisted into the U.S. Navy on April 4, 1944 and retired November 1, 1968 after 20 years of service. While in the Navy, he served in the Pacific Theater during WWII and participated in the occupation of Japan. He was also in the Korean and Vietnam wars. Don was a "plank" owner and crew member of the nuclear ballistic missile submarine the USS Thomas Jefferson. Don was awarded numerous medals for his service, including medals such as the Asian Pacific Medal, World War II Victory medal and the Armed Forces Expeditionary medal. He retired as a Navy recruiter in Alexandria, MN.

Upon retiring from the Navy, Don worked for the U.S. Post Office in Brainerd, MN for 21 years and retired from the post office in 1990.

Don was united in marriage to Devona (Dee) Koester on August 19, 1961 in Swanville, MN and was married for 55 years. Don was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Brainerd and was a lifetime member of the Brainerd V.F.W. and 45-year member of the Brainerd Legion.

He enjoyed fishing, hunting (50+ years at the Bonnie Doon Sheep Ranch in Orr, MN) and liked to work in his garden and on his lawn. He enjoyed sports, especially watching his two boys play baseball and basketball. He was also very fond of his grandchildren and enjoyed following their activities.

Don is survived by his wife, Devona, son Kelly (Carol) Peterson of Savage, MN, son Travis (Kim) Peterson of Elk River, MN, grandchildren Tara (Jesse) Hahn of Prior Lake, MN, Brittanie (Justin) VanDenBerg of Savage, MN, Brandon Peterson of Savage, MN and Drew Peterson of Elk River, MN. Don also has 3 great-grandchildren (Owen, Julia and Ella).

Don was preceded in death by his parents Albert and Manda Peterson, brothers Lawrence, Melvin, John and Percy, his sister Lilah and grandson Chase.

Services will be held 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, November 10, 2016 at Zion Lutheran Church in Brainerd with Pastor Steve Benson officiating. Visitation will be held on Wednesday from 4-7 p.m. at Nelson-Doran Funeral Home in Brainerd and will continue the hour prior to service at the church on Thursday. Burial with military honors will be in Minnesota State Veterans Cemetery.
