Patriots split with Aitkin in Mid-State battle

Austin Meister went 3-4 with a triple, drove in two runs and pitched all seven innings for the visiting Pequot Lakes Patriots in a 5-2 win over the Aitkin Gobblers in a doubleheader battle between the two Mid-State Conference leaders Monday, May 20.

However, the Gobblers bounced back to beat the Patriots 10-2 in the nightcap and win the conference championship outright behind a complete game effort by Logan Olson. Aitkin finishes 9-1 in the Mid-State while Pequot Lakes is 8-2.

Grant Kotaska finished 3-3 with a double for Pequot in the first game. Nic Kotaska and Daltin Ackerman also contributed doubles. Meister struck out four, walked one and allowed six hits.

In Game 2, Olson struckout four, walked three, hit two batters and surrendered two runs on five hits, including two by the Patriots' Grant Kotaska.

The Patriots, 12-5 overall, were scheduled to end the regular season against Pillager Tuesday, May 21, and then begin the Section 8-2A playoffs Tuesday, May 28.

Patriots sweep Staples-Motley

On Friday, May 17, Cam Anderson went 2-2 with a double and a home run as Pequot Lakes defeated the Staples-Motley Cardinals 11-1 and 13-0 in a conference doubleheader.

In the nightcap, Daltin Ackerman was 3-4 with three RBIs and a double, Anderson struck out three and added a double while Dylan Messenbrink was 2-3 with three RBIs and a triple.

Joshua Kossan was 2-3 for the Cardinals, who dropped to 3-6 in the conference and 6-9 overall.
