Everyone knows someone who has faced cancer.

When we hear a loved one say that they have cancer, we feel helpless and want to do anything we can to make them be healthy again.

The Pine River-Backus Area Relay For Life is a time when we gather to walk through the night taking steps to fight cancer. It is a time to remember those we have lost to this awful disease and those who are still fighting it.

It is a time where there are tears, smiles, encouragement and celebration. Yes, there is celebration - a celebration of the survivors and a time for hope.

At dusk when the luminaries are lit, there are a vast array of emotions. To some the glow of the candles may be a symbol of never losing the memories of a friend or loved one, or it may remind us that His light shines for everyone to see and for others it is a glow of peace and comfort.

Donations of $10 allows the donor the opportunity to decorate the luminary bag either in honor of or in memory of someone. The donations go toward research, advocacy, education and services to cancer patients in the local community.

People will have the opportunity to decorate a bag at the event or contact Tina Grewe at 218-568-6084 or email tgrewe@tds.net to decorate prior to the event.

Every step taken is helping to find a cure to save more lives. Please join us at the Pine River-Backus track and field on Friday, June 19, at 7 p.m. for the opening ceremony and take a step of hope!

For this reason, I am part of the American Cancer Society Relay For Life.

Debbie Gearey is captain of the Country Footsteps team from Backus.
