It appears the Brainerd lakes area is too far south to see a potential of up to a foot of snow like its neighbors in the northeastern part of the state, such as Ely.
Brainerd will be more wet than anything, which will make residents either happy or sad depending on their proclivity for snow.
The forecast for Brainerd is mainly rain during the day Wednesday, Nov. 20, with the rain gradually changing to snow late Wednesday night, as temperatures drop.
The National Weather Service in Duluth issued a hazardous weather outlook for the Northland, with the northern part of Crow Wing County and parts of Cass and Aitkin counties to be impacted. The weather service reports a wintry mix of rain, snow and freezing rain is expected Wednesday through Thursday. Precipitation will gradually transition to all snow late Wednesday night. The Minnesota Arrowhead, central and northern St. Louis counties can expect snow totals between 4-10 inches, with isolated amounts of 12-plus inches. Koochiching, Itasca, northern Cass and Iron counties can expect 3-6 inches of snow.
The rest of the region will likely see 1-3 inches, the NWS reports.
In the far northern part of Minnesota and Iron County in northwest Wisconsin, the snow is anticipated to be wet and heavy. Snowfall rates will be heavy at times.
The weather service reports the snowfall amounts from the Brainerd lakes area to the Twin Ports area is uncertain.
“If colder air filters in quicker than currently forecast then totals will need to be increased,” it reported. “The exact timing of wintry mix transitioning to all snow is uncertain.”
The NWS forecast shows Walker may see between 1-4 inches of snow; 2-4 inches in Duluth; 4-6 inches in Grand Rapids; 4-7 inches in Big Falls and Silver Bay; and 6-10 inches in Ely.
With the wintry weather report, motorists are encouraged to use caution on the roads and highways.
