School Readiness offered in Pequot Lakes for ages 4-5

Preparing for kindergarten is the task of 4- and 5-year old children who are one year away from starting school in kindergarten. The Pequot Lakes School Readiness program is designed to meet the learning needs of preschool aged children.

School Readiness classes will run the week of Sept. 14 through the week of May 9, 2016, at the Early Childhood Center on the east end of Eagle View Elementary School in Breezy Point. There are 32 weeks of class.

Families can choose from four School Readiness sections:

• Section 1 meets Tuesdays (one day per week) from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Class meets for seven hours each week.

• Section 2 meets Wednesdays (one day per week) from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. This section can be combined with the Extended Day Stay and Play program offered Fridays from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Note for fall 2015 that Section 2 and the Extended Day option are full. You may request to be on a waiting list.

• Section 3 meets Wednesdays and Fridays from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. Class meets for six hours each week.

• Section 4 meets Wednesdays and Fridays from noon to 3 p.m. Class meets for six hours each week.

Call the Early Childhood programs at 218-562-7520 to sign up for one of the School Readiness sections.

No child will be turned away from a School Readiness class due to an inability to pay the class fee. There is a required deposit to register a child. Eligible families may apply for a Parent Aware scholarship to cover the cost of the tuition/class fee. Ask about the scholarship when you call.

The School Readiness program and the Pequot Lakes School District transportation department are piloting bus transport of School Readiness students during the 2015-16 school year. The bus transportation will be offered in the regular morning route and the regular afterschool route.

There is no midday bus transportation offered. You will need to request bus transportation when you register for your School Readiness class.

The School Readiness program is based on the Big Day for Pre-K curriculum and assessments. The program has been given a four star rating by the Parent Aware program, which is the highest rating offered. Licensed early childhood teachers conduct classes in a school environment.

The Big Day for Pre-K assessments are connected with the kindergarten entrance standards. The School Readiness teachers align their instruction with the kindergarten entry standards.

Early learning has been shown to give children a head start on developing their literacy skills, building social skills and preparing for participation in academic settings. Minnesota has designated School Readiness preschool education as a step in building the world's best workforce.
