State Sen. Carrie Ruud, R-Breezy Point, recently attended a joint conference of the Children's Land Alliance Supporting School (CLASS) and the Western States Land Commissioners Alliance (WSLCA) in Moab, Utah.

CLASS is a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing educational leaders and legislators information on the productive use of school trust lands and funds. The group consists of school board members, PTA members, educators and legislators who deal with school trust monies in their states.

For more than 60 years, the WSLCA has brought together key land managers responsible for overseeing the administration of over 440 million acres of public and school trust land assets in 23 western states. Combined, these states represent the largest land owner group in the nation, second only to the federal government.

"As chair of the School Trust Lands Committee I thought it was vitally important to attend this conference," said Ruud. "We discussed how trust dollars are used in each state, how to protect them and how to enhance the dollars. Up to this point Minnesota has done a very poor job as trustees of the Children's Trust. I want to make sure we do a better job for the children of Minnesota."

Of the 8 million acres of trust land granted at statehood Minnesota has 2.5 million acres of trust land remaining. In 2014, gross revenue from the land was $63.5 million, but not enough of these funds reached the trust. The corpus of the trust fund was $1.1 billion.
