The Northern Minnesota Railroad Heritage Association in Crosslake is offering a one-time, six-month trial membership for $60 for anyone interested in learning about and building a model train layout or in operating a model train.

Club members will work with people to teach them how to build a layout, make trees, wire the layout, and program and operate the trains. Participants will make new friends in the process.

Visit the club to see trains and layouts, and member-operators who can answer railroading questions. The club has an HO historical layout, an O-scale layout and a children's layout for young train engineers to operate. A G scale train (Garden Train) is under construction and running outdoors.

Outside the building is a half size model of the Wm Crooks engine and cars. A Wm Crooks Day celebration will be held Aug. 30 with a band, information and a presentation about the history of the Wm Crooks train provided by the man who built the scale model.

The club is selling raffle tickets for a complete 4- by 8-foot O scale model railroad layout worth more than $1,000. Raffle tickets are $5; funds raised will be used for operating expenses. The drawing will be Dec. 6.
