The Pine River-Backus School Board has selected two candidates to return for a second interview for the school district's superintendent position:
• David Endicott, superintendent at Walker-Hackensack-Akeley Public Schools. Endicott was principal at Eagle View Elementary School in Breezy Point from 2011-14 before being hired as W-H-A superintendent.
• Thomas Rich, superintendent at Melrose Area Public Schools
The candidates were selected from a pool of 15 applicants based on criteria established by the school board. Five candidates were interviewed the week of April 11.
The school board was scheduled to interview Endicott and Rich on Tuesday, April 19, beginning at 5 p.m. in the Media Center at Pine River-Backus School. The board then planned to meet to deliberate, after this issue of the Echo Journal went to press.

This is the second time the school board had the opportunity to fill the superintendent position, which opened when Cathy Bettino announced she would retire at the end of the school year. The board's first offer, made to Michael Kolness of Ada-Borup School, was turned down due to salary limitations. The board advertised a second time, listing a salary cap to eliminate candidates who wanted to make more than that cap.
