Forty-five local high school students will be celebrated as Students of Character at an online event Wednesday, April 14, including two Pequot Lakes and two Pine River-Backus students.
Those students are Frankie Holmgren and Carlie Nixon, both Pequot Lakes High School students, and Avery Trout and Malachi Wipper, both PR-B students.
At 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 14, honorees and the public can visit @sourcewellgov on Facebook and access the link to join the virtual event. The celebration will honor students from 23 area high schools. Every student will receive a $600 scholarship to put toward post-secondary training or education, thanks to the generosity of local businesses, organizations and people.
A recording of the complete event will be shared the following day at sourcewell-mn.gov and on the Sourcewell Facebook page.
The Students of Character Celebration recognizes high school juniors and seniors in the region for their quiet leadership, perseverance and dedication to their community, school and fellow students. Donations from local businesses, organizations and individuals make it possible for each student to receive a scholarship, plus a chance to win door prizes.

Frankie Holmgren
Pequot Lakes High School, nominated by Principal Aaron Nelson
Frankie has endured many obstacles in her life, including the death of her father. She is a beacon of hope for our student body. She’s been an advocate for other students, helping them find resources and a sense of belonging within the Patriot family. Frankie enjoys art and trapshooting. She plans to go to school for microblading.
Carlie Nixon
Pequot Lakes High School, nominated by Principal Aaron Nelson
Carlie exemplifies the traits we look for in all our students, the characteristics no letter grade can measure. Despite some hardships in her life, Carlie is upbeat, diligent, friendly, humble and gracious. There have been many tough days for all students and staff this year and it is during those tough days that Carlie really shines. Her smile, laughter and can-do attitude inspire all of us. Carlie plans to attend Central Lakes College.
Avery Trout

Pine River-Backus High School, nominated by high school counselor Mary Sigan
Avery has a maturity and sense of empathy that are rare for her age. She’s experienced many challenges in the past few years – challenges that no student should have to deal with, ever. She is a gentle leader, fiercely loyal and levelheaded. She recognizes the most important details in life and thrives by helping others. Avery plans to attend Bemidji State University and pursue a career in nursing.
Malachi Wipper
Pine River-Backus High School, nominated by high school counselor Mary Sigan
Malachi is fiercely true to himself and incredibly kind. Even when he deserves most of the credit for a task, he is quick to share the spotlight. He’s intelligent and a self-starter. He’s committed to his faith and has a heart for service to his school and community. Malachi plans to study criminal justice at Central Lakes College.
