Calling all turkeys ...

The Pine River-Backus Family Center's Food Shelf program's Advisory Board would love

to be able to provide hungry families with turkey and fixings for Thanksgiving this year.

With the cost of groceries rising for everyone it is becoming harder for the Food Shelf to even provide well-rounded, healthy choices for our clients. With the impact of the avian flu on the turkey market this year, we are anticipating a significant increase in what we have paid for the birds in the past.

One person suggested possibly substituting chickens, but that's un-American!

Seriously, it is only fair to try to give the traditional turkeys for this very special family gathering. And imagine Thanksgiving without the stuffing, cranberries and pumpkin pie. These are the bare essentials at our own holiday tables. We need you to dig deep into your pockets and see if you can purchase a Thanksgiving meal for a family who may have to go without.

What a blessing it will be to celebrate your generosity at your own family gathering. This would be adding a little sugar and spice to your Thanksgiving meal.

No one has been able to quote us a price for turkeys yet. We suspect a significant increase. With everything included, we are speculating that each box for clients will cost approximately $45 to $50.

The total vouchers we gave out for our last holiday were 120. And, sad to announce, we've had a dramatic increase in new families coming into the Food Shelf.

If you or your family can sponsor (or help sponsor) a family this Thanksgiving, the PR-B Family Center and families in need would be sincerely grateful. Our community is filled with compassionate, loving neighbors, so we are very hopeful this need will be answered.

Support for the Thanksgiving boxes can be sent to: Pine River Area Food Shelf, P.O. Box 1, Pine River, MN 56474. Note in the memo this is to support a Thanksgiving box.

Thank you!
