The Pequot Lakes School District hopes to attract more substitute teachers with new incentives.

Substitute teachers at Pequot Lakes are currently paid $125 per day. But with action taken by the school board Monday, Oct. 18, substitute teachers will now earn an additional $100 for every five full subbing days in the district for the remainder of the 2021-22 school year.

Superintendent Kurt Stumpf stated in a news release substitutes, including substitute teachers, play a vital role in providing a high-quality education and experience for students. The school district has seen roughly 25% of all substitute teaching positions left unfilled the first two months of the school year.

The school district will host a substitute registration night 5-6 p.m. Nov. 8 in the middle school/high school media center. Those interested in any substitute positions are welcome to attend. Substitutes are needed in teaching, paraprofessional, custodial, transportation and food service. School administrators will be available to answer questions and Teachers on Call, the company overseeing substitutes, will be present to assist in registration.

According to the Minnesota Professional Educator Licensing and Standards Board, a short-call substitute licensure candidate must have a minimum of a bachelor’s degree. Minnesota candidates who have completed student teaching through a teacher preparation program but do not yet have a bachelor’s degree may apply. The student teaching grade must be posted on the transcripts.

In lieu of a bachelor’s degree, a candidate may provide evidence of five years of work experience, an associate’s degree or a professional certification from an approved certifying organization that is directly aligned to a career and technical or career pathways licensure field. The short-call substitute license is valid for three years, expires on June 30 of the expiration year and may be renewed an unlimited number of times.

Those interested in becoming a substitute may contact Megan Carlson at the Pequot Lakes School District Office at 218-568-9203.
