Parents requested more hours of class time per week to help their child to be ready for school days when they enter kindergarten. The 2014-15 School Readiness classes are all longer than the previous class hours.

Parents also said they wanted to have convenient drop-off and pickup times. The SR schedule will work with the elementary school start and pickup times.

Section 1 will meet from 8:30-11 a.m. Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays for a total of 7.5 hours of school per week.

Sections 2 and 4 will meet from noon to 3 p.m. Wednesdays and Fridays for a total of six hours of school per week.

These sections are integrated classes with a limited number of students from the Early Childhood Special Education program enrolled in both sections.

Section 3 meets from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Thursdays for a total of 6.5 hours of school per week.

SR uses the Big Day for Pre-K curriculum and assessments. The early childhood licensed teachers have been trained to meet the age appropriate learning needs of the preschool children. Students are learning oral and written language skills, literacy concepts like letter recognition, print awareness; number skills and shape recognition (geometry).

Many students benefit from time to learn school behavior skills like listening, waiting their turn, lining up, sharing supplies and following directions. Students learn through a variety of activities offered under the Big Day curriculum.

Parents are invited to be a classroom volunteer and attend school periodically with their child. Parent-teacher conferences are held twice a year to discuss the student learning and areas of need.

SR assessments are coordinated with the kindergarten entry records on file at school. The Big Day for Pre-K curriculum has online reading and fun activities that families can access at home for family learning time.

SR is open to all Pequot Lakes School District students one year before entering kindergarten. To enroll, call 218-562-7520.

Parents are asked to pay an enrollment fee to hold their place in a class. No student will be denied participation based on an inability to pay. Many families are eligible to apply for Parent Aware scholarship funding. Scholarship applications forms are available in the Early Childhood Family Education/SR office on the east end of Eagle View Elementary School.

The value of early learning has been shown to help students with their kindergarten to grade 3 school success. Early learning that increases vocabulary promotes later reading and literacy skills.
