In a work session on Monday, May 2, the Pequot Lakes School Board reviewed the school district's preliminary budget for 2017.
The draft of the budget indicates the district will be working with a deficit of $29,629, which council member Curt Johnson said was "within a whisker" of a balanced budget.
"I can't remember the last time we were close (to a balanced budget), so job well done," council member Valarie Wallin said.
Though the district's general fund will be operating with a deficit of roughly $120,000 - an improvement of more than $400,000 from the previous year - its operating capital shows a surplus of roughly $90,000.
More than 80 percent of the projected expenditures for the district is dedicated to salaries, wages and employee benefits, and roughly $480,000 is allocated for supplies and materials.
