LUVERNE, Minn. -- A 71-year-old Luverne man is dead after being struck by a vehicle in a crosswalk shortly before 9 p.m. Wednesday in downtown Luverne.
Marv Cleppe was in a motorized wheelchair in the eastbound lane of Main Street, stopped at a red light in the crosswalk on Cedar Street, the Rock County Sheriff’s Department said in a news release.
When the traffic light turned to green, Cleppe entered the crosswalk, where he was struck by a truck making a right-hand turn. The driver of the truck was Timothy James, 52, of Chattanooga, Tenn.
Cleppe was transported to the Sanford Luverne Hospital where he was pronounced dead as a result of injuries sustained in the crash.
The sheriff’s report states that James was not distracted at the time of the crash, and it doesn’t appear that alcohol or drugs were a factor. Toxicology reports were administered on James and will be sent to the Bureau of Criminal Apprehension.
