In recognition of Armed Forces Day, which was May 21, Heartland Hospice honored a veteran who lives at Hills Crossing assisted living in Nisswa.

George Buchan, a World War II Navy veteran who served from 1943-46, was honored Friday, May 20.

Buchan, a barber on the ship, served in the Aleutian Islands and led the charge of minesweeping. His daughter, Wendy, said her dad has so many stories to tell that she hasn't heard the same story twice, and she learns something every time he shares a story.

He is a proud member of the White Bear Lake VFW Post 1782.

Buchan and his wife of 70-plus years, Beverly, have six children - three boys and three girls. They moved to Hills Crossing in Nisswa to be closer to their daughter, Wendy.

George and Beverly received a handmade Blanket for Veterans from members of the The Pequot Lakes Eagles 4-H Club, led by Susan Mathison-Young, a nurse practitioner with Heartland. The club participates in various community projects such as Blankets for Veterans, Christmas baskets for local nursing home fundraisers, Gillette's Children's Hospital fundraisers, and Relay for Life and county fair projects like gardening and crocheting.

Heartland Hospice is a partner of the We Honor Veterans Program. Heartland recognizes the unique needs of America's veterans and their families, as well as accompany and guide veterans through their life stories toward a more peaceful ending.
