CROW WING COUNTY — As part of the One Vegetable, One Community campaign by the University of Minnesota Extension, Crow Wing County has selected the green bean as their vegetable for 2023.
The race was close between candidates that also included broccoli, cabbage, peas and squash. Winners in the past include the carrot in 2020, salad greens in 2021 and the cucumber for 2022. There were 1,667 votes cast.
As the 2022 vegetable of the year, the cucumber will continue its reign until Jan. 1. Then, the green bean takes over the duties, including public appearances in schools, at community events and, of course, planting and growing in gardens across Crow Wing County.
Crow Wing Energized worked with community partners to distribute 2,728 cucumber seed packets and the cucumber was incorporated into food served at events Crow Wing Energized hosted.
