Before the Brainerd lakes area was washed clean by a deluge of storms, Memorial Day ceremonies in area communities honored America's heroes throughout the country.
In Pine River, the American Legion hosted its first ceremony at the new rock riffle dam at Norway Brook. Concerned that the wreath would get stuck in the rock weir dam, it was placed at the base of the flag pole in the park in honor of those lost at sea.
The ceremony then continued at Pine Ridge Cemetery at the veterans section of the cemetery, followed by another at Swanburg Cemetery.
The Crosslake-Fifty Lakes American Legion held their Memorial Day service at Pinewood Cemetery. The guest speaker was Alec Embree, a veteran who spoke about the mental health struggles many veterans return with after service.
The Crosslake Fire Department displayed their 78-foot flag.
