Lakes Area Music Festival to present ‘Great American Songbook’

BRAINERD — The Lakes Area Music Festival will kick off its fall programming at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 30, at the Gichi-ziibi Center for the Arts at Brainerd High School with a concert of vocal jazz and show tunes featuring audience favorite and Broadway soprano Andrea Ross.

Ross will bring a program of familiar tunes from the “Great American Songbook” – jazz standards, pop songs and show tunes of the early decades of the 20th century, including Gershwin, Cole Porter and more.

Group meets at Lord of Life Church

She performed as "Maria" in the Broadway Tour of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s "The Sound of Music," and began her career in her hometown of Boston and caught the attention of legendary Broadway composer Andrew Lloyd Webber, who became her mentor.

Lloyd Webber and Universal Music Group: Classics and Jazz produced Ross’s solo album, Moon River, which debuted on the Top 50 UK Charts.

Ross has been a featured soloist with top symphony orchestras including the Boston Symphony Orchestra, Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, Detroit Symphony Orchestra, Utah Symphony Orchestra, Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, BBC Symphony Orchestra, and KBS Symphony Orchestra in Seoul, South Korea.

She first performed at the Lakes Area Music Festival in 2021 with a tribute to Judy Garland and was featured with the LAMF symphony in songs from "West Side Story" at the 2022 season-opening gala.

Ross will be joined by jazz pianist Will Kjeer from the Juilliard School in New York City.
