PINE RIVER — Brainerd High School junior Will Thomes was selected as a winner of the Pine River sesquicentennial logo design contest.

That's pretty awesome that mine got chosen. I'm kind of shocked.

The 150-year committee ran the contest from December 2021 through the end of February. Thomes said he decided to enter the contest with encouragement from his teacher.

"My graphic design teacher showed it to me because I signed up for a second semester of graphic design," Thomes said. "I'm pretty interested in it. He showed it to me and I pretty much started working on it right away in second semester."

Thomes' design was selected from among others in April.

"I feel pretty good," Thomes said. "That's pretty awesome that mine got chosen. I'm kind of shocked. I would not have thought mine would have gotten chosen, but I'm super happy they picked it."

The design will be used to promote the 150th anniversary leading up to an event planned for the week of July 4, 2023.

Thomes is considering pursuing video production but has not yet chosen a school.
