After the Jenkins Park Board reviewed open house comments to create a Master Park and Open Space Plan, the Jenkins City Council on Monday, July 14, approved the plan.
Residents who attended the open houses that began at the end of May contributed to surveys that the park board used to create the plan. Survey results showed that residents wanted to see a dog walking area, bicycling trails and connectivity to other parks and trails.
The survey also sought color preferences, fence types and additional structures for Veterans Park and the baseball field.
The Jenkins council approved the plan and then granted permission to the park board to spend $7,000 to begin work on one of the top four projects identified in the master plan. One of the first projects will be to identify optimal seating areas in the park and install benches and/or picnic tables.
Overall, the master plan details ways to better use the public spaces in the city and to make them more appealing.

In other business Monday, the council:
• Appointed election judges.
• Approved a request for proposal for planning services for someone to work on an "as needed" basis to review the city's comprehensive plan and zoning and subdivision ordinances and to give assistance in other areas.
• Reviewed the council's annual salary in comparison to other cities. The comparison found the Jenkins mayor and council members are paid more than in some cities, such as Wahkon, and less than other cities, such as Pine River. The council tabled the discussion.
