DULUTH -- A missing Duluth man was found dead outside a small town in Utah on Friday, after authorities retraced his steps and discarded water bottles along a local hiking trail.

Robert Berquist, 66, was last seen leaving Red Cliff Lodge outside of Moab, Utah, Thursday morning, but the Grand County Sheriff’s Office became concerned about his whereabouts when Berquist’s vehicle was discovered unmoved later that day.

Rescue and safety personnel followed a trail of shoe prints and discarded water bottles to Berquist’s body, which was found at 2 a.m. Friday, 15 hours after Berquist left the lodge, authorities say.

Berquist’s body was flown to the Emergency Operations Center in Moab and was later transported to the Utah State Medical Examiner’s Office in Salt Lake City.

Daytime temperatures in Moab reached the mid-90s Thursday.
