In its regular meeting Tuesday, July 6, the Breezy Point City Council unanimously voted to accept the resignation of council member Mark Miller.
Miller has been charged with wire fraud, securities fraud and conspiracy to commit securities fraud in a “pump-and-dump” stock scheme, and submitted his resignation - effective immediately - on Wednesday, June 23.
“My only discussion point is an apology,” council member Gary Bakken said. “It is very embarrassing for all of us.”
As a part of the motion to accept the resignation, the council also declared a vacancy on the council and approved the submission of applications for a new council member to fill the remainder of the term through 2024. Miller was elected in November 2020 to a first term.
Applicants are to be interviewed during the council’s Monday, Aug. 2, council meeting.
In other action July 6, the council:
Acknowledged a request for additional signage on Nickel Road, but voted 3-1 to refrain from adding new signs and deploying a speed trailer on the street. The decision matches the recommendation of the road committee, arguing that additional signage can be a distraction. Bakken voted against the measure, saying additional signage was necessary.
Adopted a resolution accepting the city’s share of American Rescue Plan Act funds from the state, to be used in a manner “consistent with the Department of Treasury’s guidance.”
Agreed to secure a hazardous structure on Terminal Road for removal, as it was deemed unsafe in a state inspection, and the owner of the building did not respond to calls or letters regarding the state of the building.
Conducted its second of three public hearings regarding the city’s policy on short-term rental properties. One resident spoke at the hearing, arguing for strict limitations on such properties. The city will host one more public hearing on the matter during its September meeting.
Mayor Todd Roggenkamp attended the meeting remotely.
