The filing period to seek election to area city, township and school board seats opened Tuesday, July 28, and two current city council members filed to become mayor of their cities.

John Ryan, whose Nisswa City Council seat will be on the ballot, filed for the mayoral seat currently held by Fred Heidmann.

Krista Knudsen, a two-term council member first elected in 2012 and whose seat also will be on the ballot, filed for that city’s mayoral seat currently held by Kevin Egan. Egan is in his second two-year term.

Also filing Tuesday for a council seat in Lake Shore was Henry Cote, and filing Thursday for a council seat was incumbent Wayne Anderson.

Also as of Thursday morning, July 30:

  • In Breezy Point, incumbent Rebecca Ball and Mark Miller filed for four-year council terms.
  • In Emily, incumbent Mayor Roger “Buddy” Lund filed for re-election to a two-year term. Incumbent council members Gerhart “Gary” Hanson and Bill Spiess each filed for re-election to four-year Emily City Council terms.
  • In Mission Township, Bob Steele filed for a special election for Town Supervisor Seat B.

The filing period runs through Tuesday, Aug. 11. The general election is Tuesday, Nov. 3. The filing fee is $2, paid to the city, township or school office clerks.

Most area mayor seats and two four-year city council seats will be on the Nov. 3 general election ballot for area cities, as well as four four-year Pequot Lakes School Board seats, and three four-year Pine River-Backus School Board seats.

The Crosslake Community School Board holds its elections during its October meeting, with seats open to staff members and parents of students. Those interested in running must submit a letter to the current school board.

East Gull Lake, Manhattan Beach and Hackensack are the only area cities with a four-year mayoral term. The East Gull Lake and Hackensack mayors' seats will be on the ballot in November. The Manhattan Beach mayor's seat is not up for election this year.

The following area townships in Crow Wing County are among those that will hold officer elections Nov. 3: Gail Lake, Jenkins, Lake Edward, Little Pine, Mission, Pelican, Perry Lake, Ross Lake, Timothy and Wolford.

All townships in Cass County hold officer elections in November, except Kego Township, which held elections in March.

Following is a list of area school board and city council members and mayors whose terms expire this year and whose seats will be on the Nov. 3 ballot.

Pequot Lakes

  • Two-year mayor term for the seat currently held by James Tayloe.

  • Two four-year city council terms for seats currently held by Scott Pederson and Mimi Swanson.

Pequot Lakes School Board

  • Four four-year school board terms for seats currently held by Kim Bolz-Andolshek, Curt Johnson and Susan Mathison-Young, and the seat recently vacated by Mike Erholtz.

Pine River

  • Two-year mayor term for the seat currently held by Tamara Hansen.

  • Two four-year city council terms for seats currently held by Tammy Hansen and Troy Gregory.

Pine River-Backus School Board

  • Three four-year school board terms for seats currently held by Chris Cunningham, Dave Sheley and Dawn Rubner.

Nisswa

  • Two-year mayor term for the seat currently held by Fred Heidmann.

  • Two four-year city council terms for seats currently held by Gary Johnson and John Ryan.

Breezy Point

  • Two-year mayor term for the seat currently held by Tom Lillehei.

  • Two four-year city council terms for seats currently held by Rebecca Ball and Gary Mitchell.

Crosslake

  • Two-year mayor term for the seat currently held by Dave Nevin.

  • Two four-year city council terms for the seats currently held by Aaron Herzog and former council member Gary Heacox. Heacox resigned Monday, July 20, because he moved out of state. The council is looking for candidates to appoint a person through the end of this year.

Lake Shore

  • Two-year mayor term for the seat currently held by Kevin Egan.

  • Two four-year city council terms for seats currently held by Krista Knudsen and Wayne Anderson.

Fifty Lakes

  • Two-year mayor term for the seat currently held by Linda Steffens.

  • Two four-year city council terms for seats currently held by Toni Buchite and Julie Engle.

Manhattan Beach

  • A four-year city council term for the seat currently held by Janis Allen and the four-year clerk/treasurer seat currently held by Marlene Yurek.

Jenkins

  • Two-year mayor term for the seat currently held by Jon Lubke.

  • Two four-year city council terms for seats currently held by Gary Hart and Charles Hoffman.

East Gull Lake

  • Four-year mayor term for the seat currently held by Dave Kavanaugh.

  • Two four-year city council terms for seats currently held by Carol Demgen and Tim Bergin.

Backus

  • Two-year mayor term for the seat currently held by Kurt Sawyer.

  • Two four-year city council terms for seats currently held by Karl Flier and John Wieber.

Hackensack

  • Four-year mayor term for the seat currently held by Larry Ciha.
