Filings for elected office for federal, state, county and city of Brainerd offices opened Tuesday, May 19, and runs through Tuesday, June 2.

To run for office, a candidate must meet all of these requirements:

  • Be a citizen of the United States.

  • Be an eligible voter.

  • Must be 21 years or older upon assuming office.

  • Must have maintained a residence in their district for at least 30 days before the general election.

  • Pay all filing fees: state office, $100; county commissioner, $50; soil and water supervisor, $50; or city of Brainerd office, $5.

  • Complete and file an affidavit of candidacy at

  • Complete and file campaign finance reports.

Candidates for federal office must file at the Office of the Secretary of State. Candidates for state office may file with the Secretary of State or with the county auditor in the county where they reside. Candidates for county office must file with the county auditor. Candidates for city office must file with their city clerk.

Candidates may file in person or through the mail as long as their affidavit is signed and notarized during the filing period and accompanied by the appropriate filing fees. Candidates who wish to file with Crow Wing County may do so at the Historic Courthouse, 326 Laurel St., Brainerd, during regular business hours.

New legislation to address public health concerns also allows candidates to file electronically for the 2020 elections. Candidate filings can be accepted by fax or email as long as the affidavit of candidacy has been signed and notarized during the applicable filing period.

Filings submitted electronically will not be considered official until the filing fee has been paid. Candidates who wish to file electronically should contact the filing officer for information on how to do so.
