Every few years the Backus City Council receives complaints from Lakeside Baptist Church that cars associated with the nearby apartment buildings have been parking on the side of the access to the church parking lot, obstructing traffic there.
That issue raised its head once again during the Monday, Feb. 3, council meeting, according to city hall email correspondence.
The vehicles are not only blocking traffic flow to the church, but the owners are ignoring posted no parking signs there. All apartment residents were informed that parking in these unauthorized zones will result in towing. The council or church personnel will call the Cass County Sheriff's Office about vehicles in violation.
In other business Feb. 3, the council:
- Approved a 5% increase in fire contracts with townships for 2020-2021.
- Authorized Fire Chief Jason Smith to inform Ponto Lake Township that the city agreed to increase its fire district to include the full township. The Pine River Fire Department previously serviced portions of the township.
- Authorized purchase of an infrared camera for the fire department for $6,500.
- Approved an agreement with Short Elliot Hendrickson engineering firm to move forward with an airport improvement grant for packing and rolling the runway, terminal improvements, PAPI system flight checks and runway obstruction removal.
