Pine River police officer Jordan Miller resigned, and the city council agreed Tuesday, Jan. 14, to hire Andy Rooney to fill the position.

Rooney was a part-time officer for the city.

“I’ve got the experience, and I’d like to keep him,” Police Chief Paul Sand said of Rooney.

Sand shared the police department report for last month, which included 150 calls, six alarms, three assaults, eight thefts and 20 medicals.

Pine River Fire Chief Kraig King shared year-end statistics for his department, which included 10 structure fires, four vehicle fires, three grass fires, one chimney fire, one cooking fire, two vehicle accidents, five rescues, one power line, five carbon monoxide calls, two gas leaks, three false alarms, six good intents, one landing zone and three miscellaneous calls for a total of 47 fire calls.

The department had 201 medical calls in 2019.

King said fire calls were down in 2019 from 60 calls the prior year. Medical calls were about the same for the last two years.

The council approved King as fire chief for 2020, John Richards as first assistant chief and Jason Meyers as second assistant chief.

The fire department received permission to buy an old police car for $500 to use as a First Responder vehicle. Responders will be able to take the vehicle home to save on response time.

Public Works Director Mike Hansen received permission to buy a 2020 F350 Ford from Kimber Creek for $37,000 and a V plow from Meyer Midwest for an estimated $7,550.

The council will have a planning meeting at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 28, and an annual fire meeting with townships at 7 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 30.

In other business, the council approved 2020 annual appointments, with the exception of the Fire Relief Association and fire department roster. The council named the Pineandlakes Echo Journal as the city’s official newspaper to publish legal notices, and Clasen, Stegner and Schiesl CPA Ltd as city auditor.

Council member Tony DeSanto was absent from the Jan. 14 meeting.
