Pequot Lakes City Council member Jerry Akerson has attended only three of 11 regular monthly council meetings this year because of health reasons and has requested a leave of absence until April 2020.
That prompted the city council on Tuesday, Nov. 5, to agree to appoint an interim council member until Akerson’s return.
Anyone interested in filling the position on a temporary basis is asked to mail a letter of interest to Nancy Malecha, city administrator, 4638 Main St., Pequot Lakes, MN 56472 or via email to firstname.lastname@example.org by 4 p.m. Friday, Nov. 22.
The council hopes to appoint someone to the seat at its Tuesday, Dec. 3, meeting.
There are three qualifications. Applicants:
Must be eligible to vote in Minnesota.
Must be at least 21 years of age.
Must have maintained residence in the city of Pequot Lakes for at least 30 days before the appointment.
For more information, call city hall at 218-568-5222.
Akerson was re-elected to a four-year council seat in November 2018. He attended regular monthly council meetings in June, July and August.
The council’s other option was to do nothing and wait for Akerson to return.
If Akerson were to submit his resignation, which he has not done, the council could appoint an officeholder until a November 2020 special election could be held.
Mayor James Tayloe and council members Scott Pederson, Mimi Swanson and Cheri Seils all agreed to appoint someone to the position until Akerson returns.
