JENKINS — Pequot Lakes firefighters were in the middle of a business meeting Wednesday, Sept. 29, at the fire department when they were paged to a structure fire at Pequot Tool and Manufacturing in Jenkins.
Firefighters were called just before 9 p.m.
“The call comes in for a structure fire which gets everybody’s adrenaline going and they said there was smoke in the building,” Pequot Lakes Fire Chief Tom Nelson said. “And we know that this place is occupied so we all mobilized right away.”
Twenty firefighters hopped in five fire trucks and they were on their way to Pequot Tool.
Chad Shogren, president of Pequot Tool, said a piece of equipment had malfunctioned and was smoking. Immediately, he had all the night shift workers evacuate from the machine shop. The workers waited in the parking lot as firefighters went to work.
Shogren said it was a minor incident and he was pleased no one got hurt.
“The machine was on wheels so we were able to wheel it out of here,” Nelson said, of the equipment that was smoking.
Nelson said the fire department was discussing fire prevention week, which is Oct. 3-9.
The Ideal Fire Department was initially called to the fire, but was canceled once firefighters determined the fire was minor.
