Brainerd lakes area police officers from area jurisdictions, including Brainerd, Baxter and Nisswa, will provide extra patrol Saturday, Jan. 24, to help combat drunken driving during the Brainerd Jaycees $150,000 Ice Fishing Extravaganza on Hole-in-the-Day Bay on Gull Lake.
Driving while intoxicated (DWI) enforcement and education is a component of Minnesota’s core traffic safety initiative, Toward Zero Deaths (TZD). A primary vision of the TZD program is to create a safe driving culture in Minnesota in which motorists support a goal of zero road fatalities by practicing and promoting safe and smart driving behavior. TZD focuses on the application of four strategic areas to reduce crashes – education, enforcement, engineering and emergency trauma response.
During a recent enhanced campaign held from Nov. 26 to Dec. 31 of 2014, Minnesota police officers, deputies and Minnesota State Patrol Troopers arrested 2,537 people for DWI.
“As a reminder to everyone, plan ahead for a safe and sober ride,” Brainerd officer Tony Runde said.
