Pine River-Backus Community Education offers the following upcoming classes. Register online at or call 218-587-2080.

  • Introduction to Recreational Kayaking (first session): 6:30-8:30 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 4, Pine River city beach. Fee: $25 (for two sessions).

This is a class for ages 18 and older. The class will briefly discuss the different types of kayaks and the various kinds of kayaking. The instructor will identify the parts, equipment and various accessories used to kayak. The main emphasis will be trying several types of kayaks and just getting on the water and paddling on a local lake.

  • Kayak Paddling on Moving Water (second session): 6:30-8:30 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 11, Pine River city beach. Fee: $25 (for two sessions).

This class is an introduction to river kayaking. Class will practice paddling in an easy section of the river with moving water and learn to enter and exit a kayak.

Instructor is Jim Bergquist.

  • Kids Fiber Felting: 1-3 p.m. Thursday and Friday, Aug. 13 and 14. Fee: $30.

Youth will learn what they can do with natural fibers by wet felting and dyeing wool. This two-day class will teach these skills and provide instruction for students to make a bookmark from felted fiber.

Day 1 will be outdoors. This process uses water, soap and Kool-Aid to dye the fabric, so students should be dressed to make a mess. Day 2 will be decorating using needle felting and other materials.

There is a maximum of four participants ages 12 and up, though younger children may participate with an adult.
