On Jan. 21, we celebrated and recognized the work of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Traditionally, schools take time to honor Dr. King in a number of ways, most notably through various acts of service.
This year, Crosslake students and staff honored Dr. King by engaging in acts of service throughout the week.
Since Monday was a staff in-service, no students were in school. Because of this, we encouraged our families to do something for others on that day.
Tuesday, we had a brief program for our students providing information on Dr. King and his work. This was also a major service day for a number of our classrooms.
On Wednesday, we asked our students to participate in acts of service that impact our school building and the people in it.
Thursday is a day that we express gratitude to various members and organizations in the community. We call this: "Thankful Thursday."
On Friday, we will be hosting a number of our community's service workers (law enforcement, city government, etc.) for a breakfast to thank them for their civic service.
Our hope and my dream is that we can instill in all of our students the character trait of service to others and to seek ways to make a positive difference in the lives of others. Certainly not an easy task for any school, but also during a time in history where the idea of serving others beyond ourselves can seem like a very strange concept.
Just around the corner is Crosslake's WinterFest celebration and our school will again be participating in the festivities by hosting our "Cabin Fever" event on Friday, Feb. 1, from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. There will be games, food and fun for the entire family and we invite you to join us.
This event also signifies the start of school enrollment applications for new students in the fall of 2019. We will be accepting applications for openings in kindergarten through grade eight and we will be providing information for families interested in our pre-kindergarten program. Enrollment applications for our online program serving grades 5-12 are accepted at any time during the school year.
I invite those new to our area or who may have interest in charter school enrollment to contact our school directly with questions. Our phone number is 218-692-5437. The application deadline for next fall is March 30. Applications will still be taken after that time on a first-come, first-served basis.
Thank you to the entire Crosslake area community for your support of our school. We are extremely grateful to you all!
Stay warm, folks.
