October is nationally recognized each year as Farm to School Month. However, Pine River-Backus Schools work year-round to bring local foods to the tables of our students.
We pride our food service on providing our students with an assortment of fresh and locally grown fruits and vegetables.
This fall we will work with two new local farms to offer hormone-free, cage-free, raised to the highest standards meats, including pork from Fox Farms and free range turkey from Wild Acres.
Our menu on Oct. 13 will be all locally sourced, featuring the pork from Fox Farms on a bun baked at our local bakery. We will also serve an apple as we proudly take part in the Midwest Great Apple Crunch, a movement for schools to join together in taking a bite out of a local apple.
On Nov. 17, we also plan to feature locally sourced food, including free range turkey from Wild Acres.
Being able to serve students the same high-quality products that are also being served at the finest restaurants in the state is really something to be proud of.
We hope to raise awareness that PR-B serves local foods in our school meals and encourage our families to do the same at their table.
