The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) will host an informational open house to discuss the proposed Gull River wildlife management area (WMA) near Pillager from 5-7 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 13, at Sylvan Township Hall, 12956 24th Ave. S.W., Pillager.

The proposed Gull River WMA would encompass up to five tracts of habitat, including wetlands and uplands along and near the Crow Wing and Gull rivers. The majority of the proposed WMA would exist through a no-fee lease agreement between Allete (also referred to as Minnesota Power and Light) and the DNR.

Allete would retain ownership of the land, and the DNR would work cooperatively with Allete on wildlife management, noxious weed control and enforcement responsibilities if the agreement is established.

The WMA would be open to nonmotorized access, wild rice harvest, hunting and trapping. Permanent deer stands and ATV use would not be permitted on the WMA.
