Crosslake School Board: Scharenbroich resigns as board chair

In its regular meeting Monday, April 13, the Crosslake Community School Board unanimously approved the resignation of board chair Lori Scharenbroich.

“The time has come,” Scharenbroich said. “May will be the last meeting that I lead, and (my resignation) will be effective that Tuesday after.”

All board members voted to accept the resignation. One member thanked her for doing an “exceptional job” leading the board, and putting in long hours in service to the school.

“It has been an absolute pleasure,” Scharenbroich said. “This is one of the best boards I have ever been a part of, and I don’t know if we would be where we are if I wasn’t with this strong group.”

In other business, the board voted to set classroom size limits at 19 for the 2020-21 school year, but gave director Cliff Skagen the authority to exceed that in “unique and compelling circumstances” without returning to the board for approval.

The board heard an update from Skagen regarding enrollment.

“Our budgeted enrollment is at 280, but our actual enrollment is at 321 at the close of March,” the director told the board. “In terms of enrollment, everything is looking pretty darn good."

The school enrolls 184 students online and 137 on site. Attendance at 98.6% is nearly seven points higher than the target attendance rate.

Skagen also gave an update on the school’s distance learning practices in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, saying the transition has been “very smooth overall.”

“With some of our distance learning, we're fortunate because we do have our online program that really helped to guide us in some of the electronic information that's out there,” Skagen said. “So I think we had that pretty nice, but we are still asking teachers to go out and make lesson plans between the first of April and the end of April, basically.”

In practicing social distancing, the board conducted the meeting via Zoom.
