Roughly 100 residents learned about 17 destinations - all within a two-hour drive from Crosslake - that make for enjoyable vacations right in the middle of Minnesota at the first Chautauqua program of the year Wednesday, May 11, at the Crosslake Community Center.

Crosslake resident Alden Hardwick presented "Unexplored Territory: Nearby Vacations You Never Thought to Take."

"This is a really special part of Minnesota," Hardwick said. "This was a chance to enjoy our area and find out a little more about it ... There is a destination picked, but the real fun is getting to the destination. The fun is seeing the area along the way."

Some of the locations included Schoolcraft State Park near Deer River, Savanna Portage State Park near McGregor and the Woodtick Theater of Akeley.

The presentation, which covered locations from Blackduck to Alexandria, saw Hardwick detail each area's history and unique traits, while providing some of his own thoughts on that place's food, scenery and entertainment options.

He ended his presentation by discussing destinations right in Crosslake, including the Uppgaard Wildlife Management Area, the Historic Log Village and the Greer Lake Campground.

"There is no place like home for having fun," Hardwick said.

Chautauqua presentations will occur on the second Wednesday of every month of summer at 1:30 p.m. at the Crosslake Community Center. Admission is free.
