Backus Lions Club awards scholarships

The Backus Lions Club awarded four scholarships to Pine River-Backus High School graduates at the May 29 commencement.

Receiving $500 scholarships were Jordan Cunningtham, of Pine River; Emma Barchus, of Backus; Kaitlyn Hanson, of Staples; and Keenan Dahl, of Backus.

Cunningham, the daughter of Chris and Karla Cunningham, will attend the University of Minnesota-Morris with a major in biology.

Barchus, the daughter of Kristofer and Amy Barchus, will attend the University of Alabama with a major in aerospace engineering.

Hanson, the daughter of Susan Peet, will attend Central Lakes College with a major in veterinary sciences.

Dahl, the son of Butch and Liz Dahl, will attend Alexandria Technical College with a major in welding.

The Backus Lions, a part of Lions International, is a volunteer nonprofit organization that supports many causes in and around the Backus and Pine River area. The club's meetings are held the first Thursday of the month and community members are invited to attend.
