Area homeowners, businesses win shoreland stewardship awards

Each year several Brainerd lakes area and statewide organizations, along with area businesses, recognize homeowners, business owners, contractors and local units of government that have implemented practices or efforts to protect lakes and rivers.

Each year several Brainerd lakes area and statewide organizations, along with area businesses, recognize homeowners, business owners, contractors and local units of government that have implemented practices or efforts to protect lakes and rivers.

Homeowners receiving the 2017 Shoreland Stewardship Award are: Lee and Ellen Uglem, Faith and Phil Shaw, Matthew and Cassandra Seymour, and Charles and Julie Costa.

One contractor recognized is Al DeChantal Excavating LLC. Also receiving an award is a partnership honoring the Sibley Lake Association and city of Pequot Lakes for the Sibley Lake Park shoreline protection.

A Protection Strategy Award recognizes Cass County Environmental Services for its accomplished aquatic invasive species watercraft Inspection program.

The 15th annual Lake and River Friendly Awards ceremony will take place from 3-4 p.m. Thursday, June 15, in Meeting Room 2 of the Crow Wing County Land Services Building. Parking is available on the corner of Laurel and Fourth streets.

The Lake and River Friendly Awards are sponsored by Brainerd Lakes Area Audubon Society, Crow Wing County Lakes and Rivers Alliance, Crow Wing Soil and Water Conservation District, DNR Division of Ecological and Water Resources, DNR Section of Fisheries, Minnesota Chapter of the American Fisheries Society, and The Nature Conservancy and the University of Minnesota Extension. Additional contributors include The Gull Chain of Lakes Association, Jerry Raedeke, Prairie Restorations Inc., Jaycees Run for the Lakes, and Whitefish Area Property Owners Association.
